Call 2 2026: Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) Grants
Author:Martin Wegmann

We are pleased to announce the opening of the second 2026 Call for Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) Grants. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and evaluated following each submission deadline.

Call deadlines

  • Submission deadline: 16 July 2026 16:00 CEST.
  • Three weeks after each deadline: applicants will be notified of the evaluation outcomes.
  • 30 September 2026: final date for completing activities.

Important note: The evaluation of grant applications and the issuance of a formal decision regarding approval must be completed prior to the applicant’s start date of the STSM. Applicants should ensure that their application is submitted well ahead of the deadline preceding the start date of the planned scientific mission, taking into account the time required for the review process (up to 3 weeks).

What are we looking for?

For this 2026 – Call 2, applicants may propose a STSM in partnership with a host organisation that is aligned to the objectives of the Action.

Applicants are also encouraged to contact the WG leaders to discuss ideas and suitability before applying (details of the WG leaders are available here https://cost-anticipate.eu/structure/working-groups/). All applicants are all strongly encouraged to foster collaboration across working groups in their applications; bidirectional exchanges between academia and operational forecasting are particularly encouraged.

In addition, some suggested STSM topics with potential host institutions and points of contact are outlined below. However, proposals are not limited to these and may address other relevant aspects within the scope of the Action.

Suggested topics/hosts:

  1. Newcastle University (based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK) are keen to host an STSM on developing a workflow for a testbed extended range multi-hazard forecasting system to support the activities of WG2. This will focus on case studies of known challenging events. We have identified some pairs of hazards of high interest to ANTICIPATE but are keen to discuss pairs which align to applicants’ interests. Contact: Hannah Bloomfield Hannah.Bloomfield@newcastle.ac.uk
  2. HR Wallingford (based in Wallingford, UK) are keen to host an STSM in impact databases which aligns with WG3. HR Wallingford is undertaking a research project for which the objective is to understand and assess the viability of multi-risk approaches to enhance Impact-based Forecasting and Warning (IbFW) for weather-related hazards, covering: scientific and technical requirements; identifying appropriate approaches; describing the interactions between hazards, vulnerabilities and exposures; and assessment of approaches. It is widely recognised that the lack of impact databases is hampering the development and verification of IbFW systems. In this STSM, the specific area of focus will be to develop and expand a multi-hazard impact database that has previously been developed for India, exploring the methods being used for European databases, and how they could be transferred to the European context.
